i have had my fair share of scary moments in this little town called provo, ut.
my freshman year, i lived in a hole-in-the-wall apartment complex called alpine court. cinder block walls, no real closets, the real deal. well one day, a spare key showed up under our door mat. my roomies and i assumed it was put there by management. so naturally, we all started using it instead of digging our own keys out. it eventually moved locations from under the door mat to the top of the door jam (why bend down when you can reach up?) well after a couple of weeks the key disappeared. we searched everywhere, but to no avail. one night after this incident, i was sleeping in the apartment when all of a sudden i heard the cupboard doors opening and shutting. you may say, it was just a gust of wind moving them. well maybe. expect these were the type of cupboards with magnets to keep them shut. i froze with fear in my bed, and then called a friend to come over. maybe it was a ghost. or an invader. i'll never know.
sophomore year, in liberty square, my next door neighbors had a 50 year old peeping tom who they reported and was caught by the police. how does that affect me? well my bed was by the window on the ground floor right next to the lit parking lot. my roommate marie walked in the room and saw a shadow standing right next to my head on the other side of the window... creep. also that year my laptop got stolen with three of my roommates home. i blame it forever on the one-shoed homeless bum who walked around our complex, jerry phillips.
but this last story takes the cake.
i currently am living by myself because my sister and my roommate have both moved out early. two nights ago i woke up because i heard the door knob shaking. i thought i was dreaming at first. but then the door shaking got more aggressive. it is common knowledge in our complex that every door can be carded with a credit card if just the door knob is locked. for some reason, i had locked both the knob and the dead bolt that night. obviously the carding wasn't working for the invader so they began to shake the whole door really harshly. i was paralyzed for a good minute until i got the courage to go to the hallway and turn the living room light on. after i did, i heard the intruder run down the hallway. needless to say, i sat awake for two hours until the sun came up.
yes. even provo, ut can be a scary place.
