byu class of 2013

i graduated today which is insane. there was something about graduating on the same stage that i had countless performances throughout my university career on that really touched me today.  as i was sitting there, my very first choir concert came back to mind. as a little 17 year old, i was so lonely in provo. i had never even thought about attending byu and yet somehow i had ended up at this huge university. the lord blessed and lead me to byu and to women's chorus because that is were i really felt at home in provo. even though i had no family in the audience for my first concert, i am so grateful for that performance. it gave me a confidence that i would find friends and belong that semester even though i was alone. that stage was for the future for me as i became a music education major and somehow managed to struggle and eventually thrive in the program. i am so grateful for the woman i have become because i attended this university, even through all the many highs and lows . although what lies ahead is daunting, i know i will be guided to become who i am suppose to be. faith in every footstep.

177!

well ladies and gents, i CRUSHED the praxis! and yes there were ridiculous questions on it! but somehow i managed to pull off a good score. it is good to know that i did learn a thing or two while at college. but i'm mostly just happy that it is no longer looming over my head! such a relief.

now i can really enjoy summer

remember how my last post was about finishing school...

well i lied. i take the praxis tomorrow. so i have been studying everything i have ever learned in the last four years in hopes that i might even get close to guessing at what might show up on the test. knowing my luck, it will end up being questions like "what is the best scale to teach 4th graders?" huh? crap.

well wish me luck!

bitter:sweet

i am done with school!!! it hasn't quite sunk in and it doesn't feel real, but it is true. it has been a rough few ending weeks and i am glad to be done. i'm sure i will be sad to leave byu in the future, but i am so relieved currently.

i was sad to part with these kiddos. they taught me so much and boosted my self-esteem in ways i never expected. middle schoolers are so forgiving, loving, and full of energy. i will always look back on my time at orem junior high with found memories.

but on to just as exciting things in my future!

kate's baby shower

a couple of weeks ago i was able to go to kate's baby shower. kate was my room mate way back during my freshman year. let's be honest here, she basically raised me. i was 17 and she was a 24 year old returned missionary. but it really was awesome. she even ended up going on a random trip to israel with me. i will never forget that year and all of the things i learned.

i know she will be such an awesome mom, from first hand experience ;)

xoxo

p.s. maybe if you are lucky, i might put up some awesome videos from that year. as our other room mate, kara, would say "they are a real treat"

byu vs. washington state

my roommates had an extra ticket to the opening game of the byu football season, so guess who got to go?? don't worry, there were fireworks, pom poms, and the byu fight song. and we even won! nothing gets you excited for fall like football stadium lights...

first day. last year.

i'm back in my first week of the school year. but hopefully this will be my last fall here at byu. it is weird to think that this is my last fall here. but let's be honest, i'm really ready to be done with byu. this week has been full of auditions, new roommates and a new ward. but also old friends and resurgences of memories past.

hopefully i can survive

scary stories of provo

i have had my fair share of scary moments in this little town called provo, ut.

my freshman year, i lived in a hole-in-the-wall apartment complex called alpine court. cinder block walls, no real closets, the real deal. well one day, a spare key showed up under our door mat. my roomies and i assumed it was put there by management. so naturally, we all started using it instead of digging our own keys out. it eventually moved locations from under the door mat to the top of the door jam (why bend down when you can reach up?) well after a couple of weeks the key disappeared. we searched everywhere, but to no avail. one night after this incident, i was sleeping in the apartment when all of a sudden i heard the cupboard doors opening and shutting. you may say, it was just a gust of wind moving them. well maybe. expect these were the type of cupboards with magnets to keep them shut. i froze with fear in my bed, and then called a friend to come over. maybe it was a ghost. or an invader. i'll never know.

sophomore year, in liberty square, my next door neighbors had a 50 year old peeping tom who they reported and was caught by the police. how does that affect me? well my bed was by the window on the ground floor right next to the lit parking lot. my roommate marie walked in the room and saw a shadow standing right next to my head on the other side of the window... creep. also that year my laptop got stolen with three of my roommates home. i blame it forever on the one-shoed homeless bum who walked around our complex, jerry phillips.

but this last story takes the cake.

i currently am living by myself because my sister and my roommate have both moved out early. two nights ago i woke up because i heard the door knob shaking. i thought i was dreaming at first. but then the door shaking got more aggressive. it is common knowledge in our complex that every door can be carded with a credit card if just the door knob is locked. for some reason, i had locked both the knob and the dead bolt that night. obviously the carding wasn't working for the invader so they began to shake the whole door really harshly. i was paralyzed for a good minute until i got the courage to go to the hallway and turn the living room light on. after i did, i heard the intruder run down the hallway. needless to say, i sat awake for two hours until the sun came up.

yes. even provo, ut can be a scary place.

the mikado

sheynah and i went to see my friends perform in byu's production of gilbert and sullivan's the mikado. it was really magical. it was so well done musically and the humor was perfectly executed.

love sheynah and my little dates

byu secondary music ed class of 2010

yes. we are adorable. and slightly crazy. but i will seriously miss these people. they have literally become my family over the past two years. i have spent so many countless hours, late nights, happy moments, and moments of complete hopelessness with them. i just don't think you can understand the intensity of the byu music program unless you are in the thick of it. i look back and wonder if i knew how difficult it would be, would i have applied? (well of course. because i'm a gluten for punishment ha)

i remember getting in and thinking it must have been a joke or some sort of mistake. see, i applied my freshman year and got denied. i thought i had a respectable and even impressive resume, but i was wrong. so i went and talked to the head of the department, dr. broomhead, about what i could improve.  he basically said i was arrogant and had no self-esteem all at the same time. i'm still not sure i understand what he was trying to say...

anyway.

well i applied again, against an even larger applicant pool. which meant there was a 8% chance (that is an exaggeration, i don't really know that) of getting in. i thought my interview went terrible and had resigned myself to being a middle eastern studies major. then one day i got an email about a music ed scholarship application. how could this be? was this an accident? because i would know if i had been accepted right? i emailed the department back and they told me that apparently the acceptance emails had not gone out yet, but... congratulations on getting accepted! i just sat at my computer and cried.

fast forward a couple of months. the first semester of the program is probably the hardest of them all. the thing is, the professors are still trying to weed people out. as if the portfolio of teaching videos, music auditions, grueling interviews, and multiple essays wasn't enough. it worked though. half of the class of 2010 changed majors. that semester involved being up by 6 am every morning. we had to learn multiple instruments with enough competency to teach students within 6 weeks ( i still cannot play trumpet to this day... but i will always love the laughter is brought when i did try to play). we taught lessons to public school children without any instruction on how to teach. basically every day was a day of chaos. but the bonding that occurred because of it was incredible. i never will forget staying up til 3 am composing pygmy style music, getting insulted by my professors at 8 am (my glasses and sexual harassment. stories for another day...) laughing til we cried because we literally were going crazy, or the car rides to our schools to observe or teach, or the epic road trip to st. george for a convention.

i don't know if the following semesters really got easier, or if we just figured out how to live like crazy people. i think we just embraced the crazy. we made the hfac our home. singing children songs and dancing with sister kenny. being the first violinist in the second violins of the orchestra and living on timpani island. playing drum pads and cursing. taking pace tests for sight singing. composing things that barely pass for music for music theory. making beautiful music in our choirs.

this program has crushed my self esteem and then raised it back up. the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. the hours and hours of practicing for juries and recitals. the moments of tears in practice rooms with each of my friends after auditions or just simply not being able to sing that song you have practiced 10,000 times once more. the fear that comes into your heart when you feel a scratch in your throat because the worst thing in the world is you getting sick one more time. the late night vent sessions. the hysterical laughter that comes when you have been running on four hours of sleep for over two weeks. ice cream for breakfast because it is the ONLY thing you can think of that will make you happy.

i would never have survived without these precious souls. and now we are splitting up. some of us are going on missions. some of us are doing student teaching. some of us are taking it slow because we need a mental break. it is really sad to split, but i know we will be colleagues and friends forever.

i know i personally have taken a mental and physical break from music. was i suppose to take classes this summer? yes. did i? nope. best decision ever. i haven't sung a real note or touched a piano key in over a month and a half. i kind of thought i had given all my musicality away and would never get it back. but i can tell you that two days ago i played through rachmaninov's prelude in c# minor for the first time in months. and i missed practicing. maybe i miss the adrenaline of performing... maybe there is hope.

it's not even a maybe. there is hope.

a hebrew adventure

once upon a time, tiger lily and friend decided to take biblical hebrew 101 at byu. friend dropped the class, but tiger lily loved a good adventure so she decided to stick with it. she journeyed through the ancient world of hebrew and then even crossed the border into the modern world. she developed a deep love for hebrew, but always kept it as a hobby while she pursued her music. well the world missed it's spunky visitor and convinced her to come back for a visit in the city of dead sea scrolls. she has been working on compiling these scrolls into a useful computer program for byu ever since. she thought her trip was coming to an end, but this was not to be so. she was just invited to dive into the pool of hebrew in the book of mormon. she was nervous and felt very inadequate, but fearlessly took the plunge! who knows when her hebrew journey will end. right now tiger lily is just excited to be on the journey.

remember when i sold my soul to music??

today was the first day of classes. yes i am taking 17.5 credits of music and hebrew AND still working two jobs... i'm not exactly sure how i am going to stay alive, let alone accomplish all of the goals i have set for myself. regardless, i am determined that this is going to be my best year at byu yet... i just have to keep the vision. wish me luck in my craziness!

hip-hop violinist

sometimes the talent at my school amazes me.

so alot of times i feel like this...

but not yesterday! i had a rockstar voice lesson. nothing feels
better then that. (except actually nailing a performance... or winning a million dollars... okay maybe a lot of things.) but in my major and in a ridiculously competitive school of music, moments like these are rare and few. which makes them that much more awesome when they actually do happen. oh ya and i am studying with this lady. she is absolutely crazy most of the time and is the hardest teacher i have ever had, but i have learned so much from her. i love music. i love life.

thought of you

Thought of You from Ryan J Woodward on Vimeo.

a byu animation professor and a dance professor got together to create this beautiful video. it is incredible and i have maybe watched it at least fifteen times... and it has made me listen to the weepies album again.

a little trip down memory lane...

my friend taylor and i went out to dinner at zupas and couldn't resist revisiting our old abode of liberty square apartments. and of course we had to take jumping pictures in honor of the occasion. i particularly love taylor's pose. he is so graceful right?

byu b-ball

(p.s. guy in the hat was ruining my life!)

so the byu men's basketball team is incredible this year! jimmer managed to learn how to play the game over the summer, making it the most exciting season to watch!

and we won of course.

stress...

maybe i wish there was 15 more hours in a day. or that i didn't need sleep. a lot of performances, assignments,  and practicing need to be done this week; plus temple, exercise, and social life. don't know how i am going to get it all done.

first day of school

so i usually get stoked for the new school year to start. call me weird, but i love school. this year however i have felt absolute dread instead. i'm excited to start my new major but i am just not ready for summer to be over. in an attempt to become more excited, i laid my outfit out like sheynah and i use to do as kids. i don't know if it helped, but at least it was fun...
